Edmund Rice was born 1762 at Westcourt, Co.Kilkenny, Ireland.

In 1802 he gave up a successful business career and decided to set up a school for underprivileged Catholic boys in Waterford.

He had created the Christian Brothers and in 1820 the order was formally established by Papal sanction.

By 1826 several communities and schools were established across Ireland. The order also moved into England.

In 1880 the Brothers moved out of England, not happy that they were not in full control of the schools they were setting up.

Ten years later, the Brothers were persuaded to return to England. St. Brendan's College (originally known as The Christian Brothers College, Bristol) was one of their early projects.
